There was a certain intensity that came through on early on in Girlpool's set at The Echoplex this past Friday night that I hadn't noticed when seeing the band perform before. Maybe it was more a confidence, a certain swagger that stems from their unaffected honesty and direct songwriting. Here are two young musicians unaffraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves and create earnest, heartfelt songs that not only seem to resonate but are genuinely cherished by their audience.
Performing songs from their self-titled EP and debut long player, the duo of Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker managed to sneak in a few new songs much to the surprise of the crowd gathered. I first caught Girlpool during the band's Echo residency this time last year and It's been such a pleasure seeing these two songwriters grow in that time. It was clear to me even then that Tividad and Tucker had a great deal of talent and promise.
Girlpool's debut long player, "Before the World Was Big" is available now from Wichita Recordings. Check out my photos from Friday night's set at The Echoplex, also featuring openers Wizard Apprentice, French Vanilla and a DJ set by members of FIDLAR, below.
