Indie darlings Mates of State stopped by Orange County's Constellation Room this past Saturday night, giving local fans a heaping dose of the duo's fun and infectious synth and drum-based pop.
Full disclosure: I haven't spent as much time keeping up with Mates of State as I should have and this show was a solid reminder of just how much I've missed out on over the years. Husband and wife team Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner clearly enjoy playing music with each other; their playfulness was on full display this night with the two keeping the banter going in between songs. The mood was so relaxed they even began entertaining impromptu requests from the crowd at one point.
Devotees abounded in the small room; I couldn't help but catch a few in the crowd mouthing along to words during the band's set, all grinning ear to ear. While everything they played was certainly a welcomed favorite by everyone in the audience, it's been a little while since we've gotten a new album from the Mates. Here's hoping the two get to rectifying that soon, as a new track was teased toward the end of the night that saw Gardner sitting in on drums as Hammel took over vocals, along with a TMI aside from Kori that she hates playing this particular song at the end of the night because Hammel's seat is always sweaty.
