San Diego welcomed Honda and Hatori back with open arms last night at the Casbah. Even the planes flying overhead to nearby San Diego International (usually a nuisance during shows at the famed club) seemed to stop as the reunited combo ran through a mix from the group's three studio albums.
Tracks off "Hotel Valentine" such as "Check In," "10th Floor Ghost Girl" and the current single "Mfn" fit right into a set of established 'Matto cuts including "Beef Jerky," "Sugar Water"and "Sci-Fi Wasabi."
The gals (accompanied by a stellar backing band including Yuko Araki on drums) brought the house down with a rendition of "Moonchild" that was nothing shy of mesmerizing and closed out the night with an absolutely kinetic performance of "Birthday Cake," the choice of which I'm sure made one fan who kept yelling out the track's name throughout the night very happy.
Hatori and Honda seemed very grateful and maybe even a little overwhelmed by the love heaped upon them by the Casbah crowd and even teased us with the promise of a return visit down the road. I just hope we won't have to wait too long for the next tour.
Cibo Matto is currently in the middle of a tour of the U.S. with additional southern California dates at Santa Ana's Constellation Room and Los Angeles's El Rey Theater. Full itinerary is up at Cibo Matto's website.
Be sure to check out photos from the night below (as always, high res and uncompressed versions of the images are up on the Flickr page)!
